Lee has lectured widely, giving keynote speeches, facilitating team building retreats and teaching seminars across the country and in Europe and Asia. She also continues to teach and provide diversity training in client organizations and through institutions such as the Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, Oregon and the Emotional Intelligence and Diversity Institute.
Lee Gardenswartz, Ph.D., partner in Gardenswartz & Rowe, began helping organizations with diversity in 1977 when she worked with the Los Angeles Unified School District to deal with its diversity challenges at the time of mandatory integration. Since that time she has specialized in the “human side of management” for a variety of national and global clients, helping them manage change, handle stress, build productive and cohesive work teams and create inclusive, productive work environments.
In addition to direct client relationships, Lee has also co-authored a series of books including Managing Diversity: A Complete Desk Reference and Planning Guide (1993, 1998, 2010), which won the book of the year award from SHRM, The Diversity Tool Kit (1994, 2010), Diverse Teams at Work (1995, 2003), Managing Diversity in Health Care (1998), The Global Diversity Desk Reference (2003) and Emotional Intelligence for Managing Results in a Diverse World (2008). Her latest work on Emotional Intelligence and Diversity with partners Anita Rowe, Ph.D. and Jorge Cherbosque, Ph.D., is powerful because it adds a whole new dimension to the intersection of emotional intelligence and diversity and inclusion. She has also written articles on diversity for publications such as Physician Executive, College and University Personnel Journal and has been featured in Personnel journal.
Lee’s passion is conducting training sessions where she facilitates team building retreats as well as individual and intercultural awareness at conferences or for people within a given organization. Skill development for supervisors, managers, individual employees, leaders or board members is at the forefront of her expertise in the diversity and inclusion area.
Lee is a native of Denver and a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. After working as a secondary teacher and staff development facilitator in the Los Angeles Unified School District for a number of years, she returned to academia and earned her Doctorate of Human Behavior from the United States International University. She wrote her dissertation on organizational stress and what a company can do to minimize its negative effects.
