“We tend to think of empathy as a uniquely human trait. But it’s something apes and other animals demonstrate as well, says primatologist Frans de Waal. He shows how our evolutionary history suggests a deep-rooted propensity for feeling the emotions of others.” Frans B. M. de Waal, Ph.D., a Dutch-born primatologist, writes about empathy, one of the key elements of Emotional Intelligence in the following article. Dr. Daniel Goleman is a co-chairman of The Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations, based in the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University, which recommends best practices for developing emotional intelligence abilities, and promotes rigorous research on the contribution of emotional intelligence to workplace effectiveness. He recently published the following article in the Harvard Business Review blog network on “The Must Have Leadership Skill.” I recently conducted a workshop at GE’s Corporate Headquarters in Fairfield, CT as part of GE’s 3rd Annual Hispanic Leadership Day. NSHMBA (National Society of Hispanic MBAs), ALFPA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting), and SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) teamed up for an evening of personal development hosted by General Electric’s Hispanic Forum. Following welcome remarks and a panel discussion, I conducted an Emotional Intelligence (EI) & Diversity workshop. It was a wonderful experience being able to introduce and engage both young and experienced professionals on the value of Emotional Intelligence & Diversity in our current and future workplace landscape.
Psychology Today published an article titled, “Do You Need a Career Coach?“ The great value is in the 10 tips for finding and working with a coach, as we all struggle to find a comfortable position of trust with a person with whom we will deeply confide in. Granted like all relationships this takes time, but the article does, at a high level, serve to review some of the questions we do not think of if we have never had a coach before.
We’ve often discussed mentoring in the past and the differences between coaching and mentoring as well, but DiversityInc Magazine took an additional approach. They analyzed some of the basic differences between mentoring, coaching, and sponsorship.

Earlier this year, via the The Octagon COACHING Model group on LinkedIn, we posed the question, “When would you work with an executive coach?” There are a variety of reasons or drivers for an individual to work with an Executive Coach.
The answers and comments that followed were not alarming, but during a time of tremendous change going on throughout the work landscape, the deep self-evaluation occurring is refreshing and honest. This is a high-level temperature of Executive Coaching, with more in depth conversations and evalutions on the horizon.
